Blissfully happy as a stay-at-home mum to daughter Apple and baby son Moses, Oscar-winner Gwyneth Paltrow was cajoled into accepting her new film role in Iron Man - a big-budget, big-screen version of the Marvel Comics’ superhero.
“I was torn at first, because my babies were little and I was wondering whether I really wanted to work,” admits Paltrow, 35.
But Paltrow was really tempted by Robert - he’s one of her favourite actors. Besides, it could be fun to do something commercial for a change.
“And it was a great experience. I’d always wanted to work with Robert; he’s so inventive and spontaneous.”
Paltrow plays Virginia “Pepper” Potts, the executive assistant to Tony Stark, aka Iron Man.
Paltrow, who controversially won an Oscar for her role in 1998’s Shakespeare in Love - many felt Cate Blanchett was the more deserving recipient that year for her role in Elizabeth - admits her break from the screen wasn’t entirely down to becoming a mum.
“I kind of burnt out in my 20s. I did so many films that my creative fire was low. Then I had my daughter (in May 2004) and I fell so obsessively in love with her that the idea of not being with her 24 hours a day was unthinkable. And then I wanted to give my son (born April 2006) the same attention.
“But when he was six months old, I started to feel the fire coming back a bit. And then Iron Man came along.”
“People are interested in my friendship with Madonna because she’s Madonna, but I’ve been friends with her for 10 years.
“The friends I have in my life are real friends and we talk about life and philosophy and husbands and clothes and spirituality. You know, the same things that all girlfriends talk about.”
